Established in 1979 as the fourth wing of the National Theatre Mannheim (augmenting Opera, Theatre and Dance), the Schnawwl theatre is the oldest community funded theatre company for children and young people in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It has its own performance space directly under the roof of the cultural centre "Alte Feuerwache" and has an ensemble consisting of three actresses and three actors. The Schnawwl's audience can grow up with theatre over the years because the ensemble begins to perform for children as of the age of two. Schnawwl presents "imagetheatre" and "storytheatre". It develops its own pieces to current topics as well as adapting the classics for young people. Along with the theatre wing of the National Theatre, it presents every year a play for families in the National Theatre.
Within the scope of its project "Young National Theatre", the Schnawwl offers Workshops for children and young people which are taught by members of all departments at the National Theatre Mannheim.
Since 2006/2007 the Schnawwl started in cooperation with the Opera the project “Young Opera”, which has its focus in New Music for children.
